Musical Interference is an ongoing project where pic chips are programmed to create generative, digital-musical compositions and then are embedded into an environment where they are experienced by the public. At the moment, one is currently embedded in the 10th Floor lobby of 2 West 13th Street. Every hour and 16 minutes (aprox) it turns itself on and begins by playing my New School ID number in DTMF format (the tones phones use to send numbers). It then proceeds to play about 20 seconds of digital music that is unique every time, finishing with a power down tone sequence, before going back to sleep. This first one is a prototype and a test to see how people would react to a sonic device that periodically but briefly takes over a space.

The next device I am currently working on will monitor the noise level of a space with a built in microphone and then communicate back to the space based on what it is hearing. The more dialogue a space has the more it will try and communicate.
