UPDATED Feb 2008 - Laser Tag 2.002 Release

Alright finally - it is here. Laser Tag 2.0 Mac and PC version.
Thanks for being so patient - a lot of time and work has gone into making Laser Tag 2.0 super nice, super dope and super easy to use. NOTE: To see a video of the first version of this system in use check it out here

Credits:
Laser Tag 2.0 is a Graffiti Research Lab project and is written by Theodore Watson and Zachary Lieberman using openFrameworks. It may be used free of charge as long as it is not used for marketing, advertising or promotion and especially not for lame guerrilla marketing events!

Some new features:
- 4 main brush modes - each with their own qualities and different brush types.
- You can design your own brushes by making png files.
- If you want to code your own brushes there is a super simple system for that too.
- Built in music player for playing your party jams while Laser Tagging.
- Network connection for sending the laser tag data to flash, Processing, openFrameworks, Max / Msp etc.
- Color! - editable color xml file - add up to fifty brush colors - works with all brushes.

The equipment:
Here is the essential equipment you will need for your Laser Tag system.
1x fast laptop (PC or Mac) that can connect to an external monitor. It helps if the laptop has a dedicated graphics card, so a Macbook Pro would be preferable to a Macbook for this reason (though macbooks seem to run it just fine!).
1x video camera that you can connect to your laptop. Video cameras that have manual controls tend to be a lot better at tracking the laser than ones that automatically adjust the image depending on how bright it is.
1x projector. Anything over 2000 lumens should be good. 1x laser pointer between 5mW and 80mW in power.

For this setup we are using a Asus F9S laptop with a Logitech Messenger camera, a Benq 2500 lumens projector and a 70mW green laser pointer. This is fine for a small setup but for larger scales you will need a brighter projector and a better camera.

Setting up the projector.

PC - The Laser Tag software is setup to work with the projector acting as an extended desktop to your laptop's main display. If you have a PC laptop and an NVIDIA graphics card you need to set your display to use horizontal span mode (or extended desktop) and set the total display dimensions to 2048 by 768. If you don't have horizontal span look into Realtime Soft's Ultramon which works with all graphics cards.

Mac users will need to setup the projector to be to the right of their Desktop and then launch the Laser Tag app, type Command-',' and then check the box that says 'use extended desktop'. Once this is done quit the application and the settings will be saved to your preferences. Set both your laptop's display and the projector to 1024 768 and you should be ready to go

High Res Guide:

Setting up the camera

To effectively track the laser we need to disable the camera's Auto White Balance, Auto Exposure and Backlight Compensation. In the Laser Tag software hit the 'C' key to bring up the camera settings box. Go through the settings box and set as much as possible to manual.

Projector alignment:

Now we are ready to align the camera and the projector. Run the Laser Tag software and hit the 'F' key to enter fullscreen. Now hit the spacebar to show the edges of the projection area. With your mouse drag the corners of the white projection quad so it fits onto the surface you are projecting onto. Hit the 'S' key to save your settings.

Camera alignment:

In the top left corner you can see the video panel of the camera. Make sure that the camera is covering the whole projection area and is in focus. If you can see the four corners of the projection quad with the camera then just drag each corner of the yellow camera quad so they line up. If the camera image is too dark to see the corners of the projection quad then have a friend beam the laser at each corner and drag the corners of the camera quad that way. Hit the 'S' key to save your settings.

Tracking the laser:

In 'Tracking settings' start off with saturation at 0. See if you can distinguish the laser just by adjusting the brightness (value) threshold alone. Note: Reducing the brightness in the camera settings (see step 3) to the point where only the laser is visible can make the this step much easier. If you are still seeing a lot of white noise in the tracking panel try using the 'Sat Threshold' to track by colour as well. Hit the 'S' key to save your settings.

At this point adjusting your camera settings to make the image as dark as possible but the laser still bright will make tracking a lot easier. Notice how in the above image the laser is isolated from the projected image even though the camera can see the projected 'paint'.

Testing the setup

If everything goes well you should be able to now tag with the Laser Tag software. When you are tagging the projected 'paint' should always appear to come from the location of the laser point if it doesn't try to re-align the camera to the projection area. If the tracking seems 'jerky' try adjusting the tracking settings till the motion
seems nice and smooth.

Clearing the image:
You can always hit the 'D' key to clear the projection manually but it is more convenient to set up an area as a button that clears the projection when hit with the laser. You can enable the clear zone in 'Clear zone settings'. The clear zone shows up as a red box in the video panel. Adjust the x, y, width and height properties to position it somewhere outside of the projection area.

Drawing settings
'Brush mode' allow you to change the type of brush you use. There are four basic brushes: The pngBrush, the graffLetters brush, the vector brush and the gesture brush. The pngBrush uses user created png files to draw with. Use 'Which brush image' to switch the image used and 'Brush color' to change the drawing colour. You can add your own png brushes to the app by saving them to the data/brushes/ folder and you can edit the /data/settings/colors.xml file to add colors. The vector brush also has a bunch of different styles - check the fat style bellow.

Drips mode
For ultimate realism enable drips in the 'Drips settings' to make drips come down from your tag as you are writing. You can also adjust how drippy and the speed of the drips with the other drip settings. Have fun!

Notes and tips:
For details about the all the settings check the guides which explain in more detail:
Brush Settings Guide (jpg)
Tracking Settings Guide (jpg)
Clear Zone Settings Guide (jpg)
Network Settings Guide (jpg)
Camera Settings Guide (jpg)

For framerate improvement: try tracking without advanced quad.

Running Vista is definitely a problem ; )

Well I guess that could be it - I am pretty sure it is solid on XP.

Oh shit - maybe you need quicktime installed?

That might be it.

You need to run it in compatibility mode maybe. Right click the program .exe and go Properties. Compatibility tab. Select Run in compatibility mode for Windows XP. Select Run as administrator.
Hit OK on properties then try again!

Good luck.

What does the console window output? - I am afraid I can't test in vista because I uninstalled it from my laptop and reinstalled win xp - I don't really consider vista a viable or stable operating system and it is a huge waste of cpu and graphics power which could be instead used for Laser Tag - sorry - vista rant over :)

Only used for fun and the locals always join in on the action. I trucked it out to this Light Up Louisville festival a couple weeks ago and the parents & kids went crazy, I turned around and there was a line peeps that wanted to take part.

I use the same Watec & Panasonic 5K you and the GRL guys used before. Was out testing it tonight, works beautifully so far. Love the color & brush options. Setup time was cut down by 75%, less tweaking needed.

I'm heading home to Orlando FL for x-mas, watch out here we come.

Seriously: While I do run an outdoor advertising service that's in the beginning stages, I have only used your software for fun, not business and have no plans to incorporate it into my service list. If you do decide to sell licenses down the road, tell me where to send the money.

Hopefully I will make to NYC to meet up with you and the GRL gang. Although I might get Rick rolled.

Thank you,
Guerrilla

Enya,

Thought I would chime in and answer some of your questions

Only run the Laser Tag 2.0 PC App (exe). It doesn't install but just runs from the folder location that you downloaded and unzipped it to.

You will need to plug in a second projector or monitor to make sure it works. You have options when it comes to connecting the projector to your computer. The best for quality is by a vga or dvi connection, if your video card has a second monitor output. Another option is if your video card has an s-video output, then plug it in to a projectors s-video input. If your video card has the option for horizontial span, select it.

-No Horizontial Span Setting-
Use UltraMon to get a the proper horizontial span and in your taskbar settings, select "Auto-hide the Taskbar".

Look through The first laser graffiti comments for UltralMon help and using Amcap to test your camera input on your computer. If you don't have a webcam you can get a cheap usb video capture device off ebay and use it for any camera, such as a cctv or handycam type. Search for ATI TV Wonder USB 2.0, it's the same one I use and it only cost about 10 dollars.

You can install it on a desktop pc, mine is a Dell 3ghz that I have in my van.

If you don't have all of the equipment required, my advice would be to borrow what you can first before buying the required components. This way you know it will work.

Good luck, I will check back here if you have any other questions.

Theo might have some more advice for you, since he is the master.

Depends on your generator. Newer gensets have a modfied sine output. No need to drop the cash on a pure sine wave converter. I run a video system in my van with 4 computers, DVD players, vid mixer, and live sound equipment. Never had a problem.

Only thing to worry about some battery recharger's don't like modified sine wave gensets or 12v DC/AC inverters.

Hi Theo,
I sent you an e-mail and I will leave something here on the board as well. I am almost ready to make my move on Vancouver and Whistler with a group of free thinkers and creative minds. We have all the tools in place but I am having an issue getting the camera to be picked up. It is a Canon XL1s via firewire to a Macbook pro G4 running osx10.4.4 . I have the software installed and it seems to be working fine I can set up via our projector the tracking area etc. but the camera isn't being recognized. The software is running what seems to be prerecorded video of a laser on a building. I have tried everything but have not been able to figure out why the camera isn't being picked up. Do I need to use a USB webcam instead ? Or am I just missing a step somewhere ?? Please help I would love to get this running soon there is an event up in Whistler that I would love to have this running for !!All the best and compliments on your excellent work. If I can ever help out in someway please let me know I am a resourceful person ;0)

In the camera settings menu change the value "Use camera" to 1

Then press "S" on keyboard to save settings, restart app to initialize your XL1 camera input.

If all fails run an rca video cable from XL1 to a USB capture card.

Understandable about the safety of your projector, I paid about the same for mine. Funny enough I also have the same Vector 3000 watt. My van alternator could not recharge my 2 car batteries fast enough, which is why I got a Honda Generator for the projector and other equip.

Check out this voltage calculator here, might help you out for researching battery capacity with your inverter.

I am wondering if your fantastic program can support more than one projector. We are in the process to setup a huge projected surface and we would like to use 2 or more projectors which can cover partly the area projected. Like 3 projectors in parallel horizontally....can we do it ? Any suggestion ? do we have to change the code ? easy ? thanks in advance !!

Hmm if you can get the computer to use all the projectors then it will work. otherwise you can just setup two systems side by side. More than than one projector on a pc will need some reworking of the code though (not much).

Theo, this is an incredible program. Thanks for making a mac version.

This is an open question. In regards to the laser pointers, what difference does the mW value make with the projector? Is it just a matter of a 60 mW laser working at a greater distance than a 5 mW, or does the power play into how the projector/program responds to the movement?

Re: Laser Tag 2.0 - How To - Download and Source Code

It is really a factor of distance and projector brightness and also camera sensitivity. 20mW will work for most smaller buildings with a 5000 lumens projector - 60mW is sort of a sure thing for almost any situation. 5mw will work for indoors and shorter distances.

I\'ve been with you since you\'ve released the first one, and I LOVED it. At one point, I had everything I needed. A projector, a laptop (with windows), and a 15mw 525nm green laser. But now, I\'m stuck with all of that but a laptop running windows. I\'m so happy that there is a new version, I\'ve been waiting for it. But now I can only get linux installed on my laptop. I really wish there was some way of running it on ubuntu. If anyone has come up with anything, please let me know. Thank you!

Try installing AmCap - if you can capture in AmCap then you should be able to capture with Laser Tag 2.0 -

Or did you switch the camera mode on in the settings? You have to set 'Use Camera' to 1 then hit 's' key to save settings then restart the app - the camera should start at this point - you can also use 'Camera No' to select which device to use (also requires a save and a restart).

Yes, I\'m using the built in iSight. After I set useCamera to 1 and the cameraID to 0 and save the settings it unexpectedly quits the next time I open it. I just tried the program on my PPC mac (iBook G4) and the same thing happened (that time I used a Logitech USB webcam with the macCam plugin). I have everything set up fine, laser is seen, camera is all good etc.

when not in full screen mode I can see the laser fine in the left panel window and can see the lines being drawn in the right window but no image is projected through the projector.
then when I toggle to full screen, an image is now projected but laser tracking no longer works properly. it tracks for about 2 seconds then stops.

any thoughts?

I'm planning on projecting outside onto a building that's about 50 feet away from the projection point. How bright of a projector should I be looking at?

Comment Trackback URL : http://www.muonics.net/blog/bblog/trackback.php/26/775/

Re: Laser Tag 2.0 - How To - Download and Source Code
2008/01/08 by Theo • • Reply

it really depends how much ambient light is on the building - what color the building is and how big you are projecting. you should also keep in mind the lens ratio of the projector. a standard lens is somewhere between 1:1.5 and 1:2.0. If you have 1:2.0 lens your image will only be 25ft wide if you are 50ft from the wall. But if you can get a wide through lens like 1:1.2 then your image can be 42 feet wide.

If the building is not lit very much by surrounding lights and the surface is a lightish color then you would probably want something between 3000-5000 lumens (to look good) 2000 might work as well but it might not really stand out to well.

hope that helps!

First off, I'd like to say kudos on getting this relase out for the mac populus. I've been dreaming of lasertagging a building right down the block for quite some time now...but I'm running into a really annoying problem. I cant get the program open.

whenever i click on it, I get an "Openframeworks quit unexpectedly" message.

I would just chalk it up to age, by my comp. seems to run everything else fine, and I just put leopard on it a few weeks ago, so.....

I guess the best I can do is tell you what I've got:

Powerbook g4 aluminum

1.67 ghz PPC processor

1gig ram.

any clues?

Re: Laser Tag 2.0 - How To - Download and Source Code
2008/01/10 by Theo • wwwReply

Hmmm - strange.
Is it the app download or the app from the source code you are running?

Do you have xcode installed?

If so there are a couple of things you can do to help me figure out the problem.

1) install xcode and try and compile the xcode project file in the laser tag source download. You might get some errors on the first compile but select -> Build -> Clean All and (Build-> Build and Go)

The other thing you can do is go to Developer/Tools/Utilities/CrashReporterPrefs.app and set your mode to Developer - this will tell you why Laser Tag is crashing.

If you need to install xcode you can download it from apple's developer's site. bugmenot.com can give you hassle free access.

Sorry I can't debug it from here - I have a PPC mac running Tiger and a Intel Mac running leopard.

Re: Laser Tag 2.0 - How To - Download and Source Code

On a core2duo 2.2GHZ mac book pro I get around 49 fps - on a Asus with core2duo 1.8GHz I get around 40fps and with my powerbook G4 667 I get 10fps.

This is all with the advanced quad turned on. Turning off advanced quad can improve fps by about 10-20fps. If you can work with out it (it scales rather than masks) then don't use it - but for the video where we are tagging on a large building it is needed because the laser is very small to the camera.

Since the festival is sponsored by Heineken, I\\\\\\\'d like to know wether it is suitable to do it because of the marketing use.

As long as it is not covered with Heineken branding or they don't just want it to write heineken logos then it is fine.

Also bare in mind that the you can't charge a fee for the service of setting up and running the software.

Anyway if you set it up for people to write their tags, messages or thoughts - and not for marketing, we would be super happy for you to use it.

Well first you need to make sure your projector is set to 1024 768 and your main screen is set to 1024 768 and then you need to follow the instructions above about setting the glut window to extend across displays.

then when you run your app you should be able to hit the 'f' key and go fullscreen across both windows - to test hit sace bar and your should a quad outline projected.

Hello!

This program is pretty sweet. I am able to get my little webcam to work, but it appears there\\\'s a calibration discrepancy. I have a Canon camcorder that I can see working in AmCap, but the program tells me:

\\\"error allocating a video device
please check your camera with AMCAP or other software\\\"

Any thoughts???

THANKS!

Hi! I got the camcorder working.

Do you have an recommendations on settings to obtain the best tracking results? There is a delay and the laser does not line up with the output.

I would love to have a big moving colored projection on the buildings..that would be cool

There is one module that moves and is in color.

The biggest is still the building in Rotterdam (see it on my projects page).

Re: Laser Tag 2.0 - How To - Download and Source Code

ohhhh - okay - like an animated gif , or video? and then tag over it?

that should be possible yes - though you would need to know how to code it (not too easy).

the easy way would be to have one computer projecting the movie and then another one doing laser tag over it - that would be super easy.

color - only shows up well if you have a birght projector (the pics from the top of this post are from a 12000 lumens ) - also the bigger you go the less bright the image so thats also a trade off

Interesting...having two makes sense...but to get an extremely bright and clear image in a 30m width size in a dark area on a white building, what type of a projector do I need? Does it have to be something like the Barco XLM HD30 (30000 lumens) or the Sanyo PLC-XF47 (15000)? They are pretty expensive although I do have access to the Sanyo from a friend.

Wow! Really awesome stuff Theo!

Got mine to work in a room wall using an HP laptop\'s built in web cam, although it took a lot of messing around with the tracking settings.

Another thing that seemed to make the tracking a lot more accurate for me, was reducing the brightness on the projector all the way. I think this is because since I\'m in a smaller space, the added light from the projector was making it hard for the program to distinguish the laser.

Anyhow, it\'s working pretty good... Planning on testing it outside soon, hopefully with a better camera.

You might also be interested to know that you\'ve now brought Lazer Tagging to Puerto Rico!!

Awesome! Yeah it is always a battle when you have a bright projector or it is very close to the camera. What I try and do is bring the brightness of the camera down as much as possible so that the laser is still visible but the projection isn't. If this still doesn't work then you have to reduce the projector brightness.

Good luck and send pics!

Re: Laser Tag 2.0 - How To - Download and Source Code

Ah, so the larger the application, the larger the requirement for
1) laser
2) projector
3) camera.

So for a grandiose scale app, I would need something more like your Rotterdam gig. 5000 lumens, 70mw and that Watec CCD. But for smaller gigs, where there is less light interference and the size is smaller, almost anything will do. Get it now, thanks Theo!

When I changed the colors to yellow, orange and red the projection went berserk and uncontrollable. The projection continued to show and draw and track the laser but irregular. ???? When changed the pen color back to white, purple or red the problem stopped. I also have to \\\\\\\\\\\\\\\"force quit openFrameworks\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\" to restart the program. Have sent error report to Apple. ?????

Hi Theo, can't wait to try out this setup!
I am already curious if i can eventually set up multiple projector/laptop/camera set ups for a huge room with 2 story high wall space, so u can paint a whole environment. So end result would hopefully be u can paint on one wall, and it mirrors on other walls, and also u can switch to other walls and so forth. Oh yeah and a ceiling one too! So it doesn't seem Laser Tag 2.0 was built for this purpose, but even before i try it out for the first time, i am wondering is it possible for multiple copies of Laser Tag 2.0 to be networked together and take over as the "live" painting surface? perhaps with a double sided laser pointer u could paint on 2 or more surfaces at once? Sorry if this kind of out there but i really want to play in such a setup :)
and thanks so much again for sharing this great software, can't wait to try it!

And i couldnt get the "c" button, the camera setting to work. whenever i press it, laser tag shuts down. o and i use a pc windows xp.
is there anyway to fix this? o and may i ask what camera do you have for the laser tag?

Re: Laser Tag 2.0 - How To - Download and Source Code
2008/02/16 by theo • • Reply

yeah it looks like the camera is set to have an auto exposure - which slows down the cameras framerate to get more light into the camera. you should be able to turn this off with the settings but if the 'c' key is not working then you can try changing the settings in a program called AmCap which is a free download or in the logitech software itself. - You basically want the exposure to be on manual and aprox 1/60 1/90 - also turn off all other auto features of the camera.

I am going to test the app on my pc - I might have to update the videocapture library for the camera setting issue.

hope that helps - theo

hey theo, I'm a huge fan of your work, absolutely amazing stuff. I've been using your L.A.S.E.R. tag system for months... here's a video of my most recent urban disruptions, tell me what you think!

pardon the second half - forgot the tripod that night (!)

I am planning on doing a video tutorial soon as it is the best way for people to learn :)

For the mac it is quite easy - just run the app. If you have a camera connected you have to change the camera setting in the app (see notes and tips section above) - save it ('s' key) then restart the app.

I put together a little media package; some info about me, some still photos of each location, and a much larger version of the video. let me know if you have any problems with the link....

OK fine I got it with the arrow keys ...but the video panel of the camera in the top left corner still not appears (and so the laser paint in the right corner)
How could I resolve this?
Kind regards Yuki

Hi,

What a nice program! For an event in Eindhoven i like to have the Lasertag present. I have some questions before buying any equipement:
I like to project on a 15mx10m screen. So the projector will be at a 30 meter distance.
What power laser should I use?
Since I letting public use the laser, i'm trying to go as less powerfull as possible.

And what kind of camera? My guess is a webcam isnt gonna do the trick on this scale. Is a consumer digital camera gonna work (Finepix E550)?
What about a camcorder like a Sony HDR-SR1?

Could you make a video of the problem? And / Or send your settings.xml file (in the data/ folder)

Is the camera size set to 320 by 240?

Well we used a Watec 231s with a wide zoom manual iris lens and a usb capture card. The Watec has very low signal to noise and you can turn off all the auto adjust features. When you get that setup correctly you can run laser tag on quite large buildings.

it works the opposite way as you would think - a drip freq od 0.0 is the most drippy.

Also it depends on how fast your camera is capturing - if you have a slow setup you will get less drips

Re: Laser Tag 2.0 - How To - Download and Source Code

Cool glad you got it working! What was the issue?

Firewire should work but might be slow as you will be capturing at 720 540 which is a lot of pixels to process. If you can capture at 320 240 with firewire it should be fine. Otherwise if you are doing 720 540 - make sure you disable advanced quad in the Laser Tag settings as that will speed things up a lot.

Please send pics / video - we would love to see the results.

good luck!

Ahh - after looking through the code - it looks like I am limiting the number of colors you can select. The xml file looks fine but the GUI will only allow you to select up to 8 colors.

If you can recompile the code - change in appController.cpp:

GUI.addSetting("Brush color", "BRUSH_COLOR", 0, 0, 8, 1);

To

GUI.addSetting("Brush color", "BRUSH_COLOR", 0, 0, 20, 1);

Otherwise just edit the first 8 colors to change their values instead.

Hey Theo, this software is amazing. Been following your work for a while now and finally have the means to be able to build this out. I was wondering, you said it was cool for a guy to use it at a Heineken sponsored festival as long as no Heineken logo's were being projected up on to it and people were allowed to write their thoughts and words freely. Is this your stance on all advertising and marketing stuff? If I had a team of guys giving away free shit on the street and this was with them for people to use freely would you be cool with that?

I'm hoping you say yes, cause otherwise I'll never have the money to play with laser tag. IT WOULD NOT PROJECT ANY BRANDING AND WOULD BE FREE FOR ANYONE WHO WANTED TO USE IT. I appreciate you taking the time to get back to me and thank you in advance.

Hey, Theo,

I posted a few months ago, and just wanted to let you know that I've built a flash-based wrapper for the laser tracking system. I gutted the actual graffiti part, leaving just the laser tracking and network code, and built a few classes in ActionScript 3 that let you treat the laser pointer like a mouse. You register flash symbols with the class, and it dispatches mouseover, mouseout and click events. I'll be making this open source, but thought you might be interested in what's being done with your work.

Yeah, I'm in the process of building a big fancy demo for it. I'll be projecting in Baltimore within the month, and I'll probably release the source at the same time.

In the meantime, I've set up a blog that's documenting the technical side of things. Nothing fancy, but it at least addresses the concerns involved, so other people don't have to go through what I did to make it work.

Anyway, I'll let you know when it goes live.

Hi Theodore,

I'm trying to test the network options, but I cant make it transfer anything.

I'm using wireshark to debug it, but there sin't any packet sent by lasertag, have you already encounter this issue?

My lasertag network config:

1
1
192
168
2
108
10420
1

Shouldn't it be?:

1
1
1
192
168
2
108
10420

Anyway I should have mentioned this but TCP Laser Tag is a server - so you have to initiate a connection to it by having your client connect to the machines IP address (the machine running LT) - therefore you don't even need to set the IP address in Laser Tag for TCP (only UDP) as when the client connects the server initiates a new TCP connection between the client and server.

You only actually need to set the IP address if LT is in UDP mode as then it will send UDP packets to the IP address and Port specified.

If you still have issues - also check your firewall - that can cause problems too.

Cheers
Theo

I'm running a sony vaio laptop,I've down loaded the Laser Tag 2.0 software. My laser is a single colour,100Mw projector with a 25pin input for IDLA,that connects to an interface that is pluged into my USB port.Laptop has a S video port and second monitor port.Do you have any advice on how to connect my laser projector to run on Laser Tag.I do animations on a Lasershow program as a form of graffiti and would love to be able to do "live" graffiti with the laser tag program.Do I need to use the interface or send the signal directly into the laser.

**MAC USERS**

You might have issues trying to use a webcam that will work. The newest one from Logitech, Quick Cam 9000 is auto focus ONLY and can't be disabled. It wont track effectively.

The Fix:
Xbox Live cam. Cheap at $40. 1.3 megapixel and is manual focus. All of the camera settings in LaserTag work.

Multiple beamers

Hello
I would like to use this wonderful software to use it with multiple beamers.
Problem is that the software sends pictures to only one of my beamers. Probably its because the outputed format.
I read something about having to change the sourcecode to solve this problem.
Does anyone have experience with this topic, and knows what exactly to change in the source code (mac). Honestly i have no experience with codes so far.
Or does anyone have another simple solution for this?
Thanx for your help.

how much tweeking of the code would i need to do to make this work with four projectors/walls i.e. in a room able to write a different thing on each wall...

Re: Laser Tag 2.0 - How To - Download and Source Code

Easiest way would be to have one laptop/pc per wall.

So:
4 x projector
4 x laptop
4 x camera

Depending on the size of the room you may need quite wide angle projectors.

I hope this isn't a commercial installation btw as we don't allow our software to be used for commercial projects or promotional events.

Spencer,

It seems that Theo has not been back to his own site for some time. I can help you.

In order for it to write across 4 projectors you would need to edit the width in the code base. The other issue and a bigger one is that you need to hook up the 4 to one laptop and have it see them all as one single output.

Email me and I can let you know how to make this happen.

Theo,

No Sir this isn't for commercial use, I understand and follow your rules about this open source program, and I understand how much you/your group has worked on this program.
I attend and bar tend at local parties, i normally just bring my two green laser to party with, but it would be nice to make more of a show with it, and add in my own music too,
I only am thinking four cuz of each wall something different, or something like that.
if I get one of those vga extension box[takes one vga and splits it’s to, two-four] would that work ?
and what are the issues having more then one camera on one pc/program? Is there a way to have all four cameras/projectors running through one PC/Laptop?

And what’s the most minimal setup in the computer do I need, i.e.: processor, ram. And do you think this could work on a Netbook [mini laptop]?

Thanks

Thanks for the explanation!

Min specs would be a macbook or mac mini -
ie: core 2 duo basic processor - 1gb ram and ideally nvidia graphics card. but you could get away with intel integrated graphics.

I think the new mac mini's that came out last week would be a perfect laser tag machine.

Hey Theo,

I'm in the process of porting the software to linux. While profiling for performance enhancements I noticed that drawing the settings menu by uses 40% (!) of available cycles. Switching to the bitmap font almost completely removes the impact of drawing the menu.

I was also wondering about the license given the abundant use of GPL code used in openframeworks.

Cheers,

The issue I found when dealing with my MBP was that some cameras just didnt work. I had to pick up a MS Xbox cam and that worked as it was seen by the Mac itself.

Also, when in full screen mode and you hit "C" The camera panel does come up but under the full screen window. If you hit "enter" this will close the camera window and allow you to go out of full screen, then back to the camera panel.

One thing that helps is make sure you dont have any extra apps that are running on the MBP. The FPS will go from 59 to 30 when you start drawing. Also check out and see what the frame rate for your camera is. In order to get it right it takes a lot of tweaking. Once you know it then setup takes about 5 minutes.

I currently have a BenQ 4000 lumen projector but will be playing with a 30,000 in a few weeks so I can't wait.

I´m trying to use this program, but I can't get it to work correctly. I can open the program with no problem but nothing happens when I move the laser. You can see some lines, but they are not the lines or figures than I'm drawing.

I have a hp pavillion dv 600 laptop, with a web cam, a Benq projector 1500 lummens and a green laser with max imput less than 5mW radio shack.
I just downloaded the lasertag2002 xpvista. Do I have to download more files to get it work? or I have to improve some of my equipment?

Thanks,

Hey everyone.

I'm just curious because we are trying to do this and having a little bit of trouble. This is a list of the equipment we are using and/or would like to use. My only question is regarding connections.

We have:

- Barco XLM HD30 30,000 lumens projector (with S-Video, DVI, HDMI inputs)
- Powerbook G4 Laptop (with VGA Port) -OR- an iMac G5 (with Mini-DVI Port)
- Watec 221s Security Camera [used in LaserTag version 1] (with BNC, S-Video outputs)
- Dragon Lasers 95mW Green Laser

As far as I know, it is possible to connect the laptop to the projector with a VGA -> S-Video cable without any trouble whatsoever. What I want to know is how do I get a Video Input to work with a Mac? Are there any other third-party hardware converters/adapters that I need to buy?

Just so it's clear, we are a non-profit organization, running Video Art/Film/Community-driven work in a downtown city setting and have no desire whatsoever to turn this into a commercial spectacle - merely hoping to open up a very cool opportunity to the community.

Any help that anyone could provide would be much appreciated.

Thanks,

Adam

Superimpose Laser Tag on other application

Thank for the work. The camera configuration works like a charm.
I would like to know if it is possible to superimpose Laser Tag on any application such as web browser.

I have one solution. If the display of the application is static (or does not change much until user refresh it), then Laser Tag may capture the screen as image. Then add the laser points on the image and then output again. A better solution is needed if the application updates its display automatically. Any comment?

This rocks. Kudos to Theo and Zachary.

(posted in another thread, which seems to have died): I'm trying to get a rig up for my wedding in a couple months, almost got a basic system up for an hour or so (HP laptop, Dell projector, cheap webcam, cheap 30mW laser from $someplace on the net),
but then the laser crapped out (duff mechanics, I think). Any recommendations for a *reliable* 15-30mW laser for this (on a tight time and $ budget, so can't afford to Be Wrong if I'm shipping from overseas).

(Name witheld, in case my g/f sees this..)

I had a problem with the Laser Tag software. I cannot get it to project onto the wall where my laser is pointing. Tracking works fine and works on the computer screen fine, but does not show up on the wall. I have extended desktop on and other programs work when i drag them across into the 2nd screen. Any ideas how to fix this?

Can anyone actually recommend a camera that works well with lt2002 in os x 10.5? I have tried 2 macam supported cams, and neither gives me white balance control in lt2002, rendering them useless ...

Sadly I booted into windows and it works :(

I'd buy a camera right now if someone can tell me a model that works well in os x!

Hi, love this project, thank you so much for all your work, and the comments here as well.

So I can't seem to find an external camera that will work with OS X. Can someone recommend one that works, for certain, under 10.5?

I have tried 2 macam supported cams but neither gives me access to the auto white balance, rendering them basically useless.

sadly I boot my new macbook pro into windows and the whole shebang works ... really want to run it in OS X...!

TIA!

Cameras that work on a Mac would be a MS Xbox cam for $40 US.
I know, I know, but it does work natively.

Also, if your on Mac and upgrade to Snow Leopard then it will break. The app needs to be recompiled in Xcode for Snow. There is some information on it at www.openframeworks.org

Hey there!

I'm planning on creating a piece of generative music that derives itself from colour and shape, using graffiti created with laser tag. It would be part of a symposium called Sonic Arts in Wales, its non-profit and has been created to promote new contemporary electro-acoustic music.
http://www.rwcmd.ac.uk/other/music_departments/creative_music_technology/sonic_artists_in_wales.aspx

I'm planning to get artists to 'paint' on the outside of the building hosting the event, and I was wondering if you could give me some guidance on the power of the projector, laser pointer and video camera I would need for quite a large scale performance.
If you're wondering lasertag will be running on a mac!

I don't mind an emailed or commented reply!

Thanks very much!

Affiliate Marketing is a performance based sales technique used by companies to expand their reach into the internet at low costs. This commission based program allows affiliate marketers to place ads on their websites or other advertising efforts such as email distribution in exchange for payment of a small commission when a sale results.

Hello!
a few days ago, I discovered the graffiti research, and I was totally in love with this way of painting and be able to picket at the same time. The problem comes here:
I downloaded the Mac version, and the first day I checked with him worked, (not quite, looked like a building, and the camera connected by firewire not recognized me) so I decided to find a webcam to know that run downloaded macam program and verify that the webcam could work. my great disappointment it was today when I decided to try it ... LASERTAG program, not boot stays on the dock suddenly disappears, makes a small glimpse but not open automatically disappears, so I gave it up to the macam and I've uninstalled, I rebooted my Mac and I'm back to prove, but I do, too. I read all the comments, and I have not gotten any response, I researched the internet and also ... 18:45 took from his computer to try to resolve the problem (it is now 0:50, I'm giving up, the truth) But I wish we can give a surprise for my boyfriend because he takes time to paint and would be a nice way to say something special.
I expect an answer as soon as possible, and if possible in a quick steps to follow to avoid losing more time.
Thank you very much,
:)
